2011 Mayor’s Awards for Excellence Recipients Announced

Gretchen Guerra presenting an Award to Excellence to Rebecca Archer in 2010.

One of the best parts of my role as mayor is recognizing people in Golden who do extraordinary things to make our community better. The Mayor’s Awards for Excellence are one particularly important way of doing that, and I’m thrilled to announce the 2011 recipients of the award.

  • Matt Burde for his vision, initiative, and thousands of hours of hard work creating the Golden Community Garden and for his commitment to fostering a civic culture in Golden of thoughtful participation and mutual respect.
  • Judy Denison for her widespread volunteer contributions to Golden’s civic and cultural life, including publishing her “Golden Newsletter” community newsletter, a leadership role with the Golden Community Choirs, organizing emergency relief efforts for families in need, and other volunteer roles spanning organizations like the Rotary Club and Save the Mesas.
  • Barbara Fall for her community spirit, tireless volunteer contributions to Golden community organizations, and leadership role in creating Golden’s exceptional parks and recreation system (including the Splash, Fossil Trace, Clear Creek Whitewater Park, and numerous other parks and recreational improvements).
  • Jan Martynuska for her community volunteerism (including a long-time role with the Golden Police Department), her long career as a math teacher at Golden High School, and her exemplary service with the Leadership Golden program, helping hundreds of Golden residents themselves become active leaders in Golden’s civic and community life.
  • Taylor Shull for his dedication to creating Golden’s mountain bike park, the energy and focus required to realize this vision, and his leadership in crafting an unusual partnership between the city, businesses, and scores of community volunteers to both build and maintain the park.
  • Arun Madan (President) and Gary Jones (Manufacturing Supervisor) of MV Systems, as “Entrepreneur of the Year” for their entrepreneurial success, job creation in Golden, and their “thin film” renewable energy technological innovations.
  • A huge thanks to the awards committee which made the selections (Michelle Beckman, Diane Chesboro, Bob Burrell, Sue Middleton, Warren Spaulding, Meg Van Ness). Thanks also go to the Golden Rotary Club, which organized the event with help from a bunch of other sponsors (Bell Middle School PTA, City of Golden, Golden Chamber of Commerce, Golden Civic Foundation, Golden.com, Golden Cultural Alliance, Golden High School PTA, Golden Optimists Club, Kiwanis Club of Golden, Mitchell Elementary PTA and Shelton Elementary PTSA).

Please join us at Fossil Trace next Wednesday evening (October 5) for my “State of the Community” presentation and the presentation of the Awards for Excellence. The reception starts at 6:30 and we’ll be done by 8pm. You can but tickets in advance for $10 by contacting Kimberly Vye at 303-260-0400 or kvye@benefitriver.com. You can also buy tickets at the door for $15.
