Biochar Engineering: Carbon Sequestration Through Pyrolysis

Biochar Engineering, in an industrial park on Golden’s north end, is busy figuring out one of the more interesting and important biomass challenges: converting biomass waste like wood products left over from fuels reduction projects into a useful, low impact materials.  In their case, not only do they produce a charcoal that can provide significant agricultural benefits to soil, but it also has a significant carbon sequestration value as well.  Steve Glueck (the city’s Planning and Development Director) and I had a chance to visit with the Biochar folks a couple of weeks ago and see their biochar production machine first-hand.  They’ve got a video up on their web site which does a good job of explaining the machine and the process.  Another very cool Golden business doing very cool things that both help the planet and help drive Golden’s economic vitality.
