The City of Golden's Water Plant: Making Sure Golden Has Clean Water

Earlier this year, the city’s Public Works Director Dan Hartman and I took a walking tour of Golden’s water plant, starting at Clear Creek and working our way through the entire plant. If you are interested in learning more about how we get, purify, and test our water, check out this video. It won’t win any Oscars, and I’ve already received a bunch of great suggestions about shooting video for the next one, but it gets the job done.

Golden’s Stormwater Supervisor Wins Innovation Award

The City’s own Dave Ackley, our Stormwater Supervisor, was just recognized by the American Public Works Association with a “Management Innovation Award” for his innovations and exceptional work with our stormwater inspection and enforcement program. Beginning last year, Dave implemented a program he developed in 1999 to include inspections and enforcement of privately-owned and privately-maintained drainage facilities. Dave achieved a remarkably 100% compliance rate in the program’s first year. As the APWA noted:

“Ackley’s countless hours of searching records, sending out notices, meeting property owners onsite to discuss requirements, conducting inspections, and providing follow-up information has paid dividends.  Through his efforts, innovation, and persistence, the City of Golden has been in the forefront of stormwater management programs nationwide, and is considered a model for other agencies to follow.”

Hats off to Dave and his City of Golden Public Works Department colleagues for continuing to provide such a high level of service to the community.
